Fermentation & Gravity

Fermentation is where wort becomes beer, and gravity readings are how you see it happening. This collection covers the measurement side of homebrewing: taking accurate hydrometer readings, understanding original and final gravity, and doing the ABV arithmetic correctly instead of guessing from a recipe's promise. The math here is exact and shown with worked examples, because it has to be — gravity readings are also your safety check that fermentation is truly finished before beer goes into sealed bottles. No shortcuts, no 'close enough': just the standard formulas brewers have relied on for decades, explained so they stick.

How to Calculate ABV: The Standard Formula, Worked Out

To calculate ABV, subtract your beer's final gravity (FG) from its original gravity (OG) and multiply by 131.25: ABV = (OG − FG) × 131.25.
